A2 license can be obtained by passing both a theory and practical test. The A2 motorcycle driving license is an affordable way to drive motorcycles without limit in the future.

A2 Driver’s License Requirements

If you want to ride a motorcycle (A2), you need some documents before starting driving school. You don’t need to have previously owned another class to start an A2 license.

An Eye Test

You must take the eye test at an officially recognized eye test centre to obtain a driver’s license. Once you pass the eye test, the optician’s certificate must be submitted to the driver’s license office.

However, a certificate of examination from an ophthalmologist is also valid. If you have this document, you won’t need to take the eye test at an optician.

The First Aid Course for the A2 Driver’s License

People who want to get an AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, L or T driving license must have completed a class on emergency life-saving measures. This course seeks to provide learners with basic theoretical knowledge and practical exercises to handle any injured persons resulting from an accident.

According to § 19 FeV, first-aid training course is not required for those who

1. A certificate of successful completion for the state examination in medicine or dentistry or proof of medical or dental training completed from another country.
2. Have a certificate of completed training in a healthcare profession, like a dental assistant.
3. If you have a certificate of training as a nurse’s assistant, nursing assistant, medical trainee or rescue service trainee, or if you are qualified as a lifeguard with the German lifeguard badge in silver or gold, you can submit your application.

Application for a Driver’s License

After you finish the first aid course and eye test, you can sign up for a driving school. Register for the driving school on your desired date if there are still open slots.

The Bürgeramt

Registering for a driving school doesn’t mean your work is done. You still have to take some time before the course begins to go to the responsible authority, like the driving license authority. This is where you’ll hand in all the required paperwork for an A2 driving license.

Please bring the following documents to your nearest Bürgeramt:

• A valid ID (like your passport)
• A passport-size picture
• Eye test
• First aid course certificate
• The contract from your driving school, or Ausbildungvertrag
• The service fee falls between 30 and 50 euros.

Procedure to Get an A2 License in Germany

The procedure for an a2 driving license is simple: gather all the necessary documents, register in a driving school, complete theory lessons and participate in practical lessons.

A2 License Theory Test

The course is made up of 16 double lessons, each 90 minutes long. Of those, 12 double lessons cover the basics while 4 focus on motorcycles specifically. If the A2 license is obtained as an extension, meaning that this class is taken alongside another, then the basic theory only requires 6 double hours.

A2 License Practical Test

The number of practice hours with a driving instructor can differ based on the student’s needs, making it personal to each individual. Nevertheless, learner drivers must complete 12 trips that are each 45 minutes long; these special trips consist of:

• 5 x overland trips (motorways, country roads),
• 4 x highway trips as well
• 3 x night drives.

If you’ve owned your license for two years, you don’t need any practical training to upgrade from A1 to A2. However, before the test, the driving instructor will confirm that you have the necessary knowledge and may go on some practice drives with you.

How Much Does an A2 License Cost in Germany

The cost of getting an A2 German motorcycle licence can be broken down into the following categories:

• The eye test costs around 6 to 7 euros,
• The first aid course at around 15 to 30 euros and
• The passport photo is available for 5 to 15 euros.
• The driving school usually charges a registration fee, which is between 60 and 200 euros.
• The practice materials for the A2 driving license cost around 20 to 30 euros. However, some driving schools have already switched to digital exercises, so that these costs can be eliminated.
• A practice drive in the driving school costs about 30 to 45 euros. However, the special trips are more expensive and amount to 40 to 60 euros. 

The motorcycle driving license A2 also causes costs that are incurred during the tests. These can look like this:

• Theory test: approx. 20 – 80 euros
• Practical exam: approx. 80 – 180 euros
• TÜV fee for the theory test: approx. 40 – 50 euros
• TÜV fee for the practical test: approx. 100 – 120 euros

Moreover, the driving license authority imposes a one-time fee for issuing the driver’s license. The price of this service falls between 30 and 50 euros. This fee is only payable upon receiving your driver’s license for the first time.

What Can I Drive with the A2?

With the A2 license, you can drive any motorcycle or scooter with a power output of up to 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW per kg. This includes many popular models, such as the Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07.

However, you cannot ride motorcycles or scooters above this limit or ride with a sidecar attached. Without further training and testing, you may also not ride vehicles in the A category.

It is important to note that while the A2 license allows for more freedom than the A1 license, it still requires the same level of caution and responsibility. Always ride within your abilities and follow all road laws to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

Driving License Categories in Germany

A driving license can be classified into five different categories. We’ll look at the types of licenses that fall into each of these categories. If you’re finding it difficult to pass your practical driving test, we have compiled a list of 14 tips and tricks to pass the German driver’s license.

#1 Motorcycle and Moped License

Moped and motorcycle licenses come in the following classes: AM, A1, A2, and A. Since 31.12.2019, it has been possible to drive class A1 vehicles (only) domestically with a class B passenger car driver’s license. This requires driver training and five years of previous possession of a passenger car driving license. The minimum age is 25 years.

AM

Two-wheeled motor vehicles with a top design speed of not more than 45 km/h, a continuous power/net power rating of no more than 4 kW, and an internal combustion engine with no more than 50cc.

Three-wheel mopeds with no more than 2 seats, a maximum design speed of no more than 45 km/h, rated power of no more than 4 kW, a maximum unladen mass of 270 kg, and a spark-ignition engine with a combustion engine of not more than 50cc.

Light four-wheel on-road quads with a rated continuous power not exceeding 4 kW and light quadricycles with a rated continuous power not more than 6 kW, each with not more than 2 seats, a maximum design speed of not more than 45 km/h, a maximum unladen mass of 425 kg and a spark-ignition engine with a displacement of not more than 50cc or a compression-ignition engine with a displacement of not more than 500 cm³.

A1

Motorcycles with a displacement of not more than 125cc and an engine power of not more than 11 kW, where the power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg, as well as three-wheeled motor vehicles up to 15 kW.

A2

A comprehensive guide to getting your A2 driving license.

Those motorcycles with a maximum power output of 35 kW, with a power-to-unladen weight ratio of not more than 0.2 kW/kg, are not derived from a motorcycle with a power output greater than 70 kW.

A

Motorcycles (including side-cars) exceeding 50cc in engine size or that exceed 45 km/h in speed, or that exceed 0.2 kW/kg in power.

Vehicles with three wheels that exceed 15 kW with a symmetrical arrangement of the wheels and an engine displacement exceeding 50cc in internal combustion engines or at a maximum design speed exceeding 45 kph.

A motor vehicle with an engine power greater than 15kW and a displacement greater than 50cc.

After taking a practical exam, someone with an A2 license for at least two years can get a Class A license. With this license, only motor vehicles of class A may be driven.

The minimum age requirement for an A2 class is 24 years (for direct entry) or 20 years (with at least 2 years of A2 experience).

In order to operate a three-wheeled motor vehicle of the A2 class, you must be 21 years old.

#2 Passenger Car License

A passenger car may be used to tow trailers up to the maximum permissible gross weight (750 kg) of the towing vehicle, and a truck with a continuous braking system may be used to tow trailers up to 1.5 times the maximum permissible gross weight of the towing vehicle.

B

Motor vehicles – with the exception of motor vehicles in classes AM, A1, A2, and A – with a permissible total mass of no more than 3,500 kg and with no more than 8 seats apart from the driver’s seat (also with a trailer with a permissible total mass of no more than 750 kg or a heavy trailer, provided the combination’s permissible total mass does not exceed 3,500 kg).

Also – only in Germany – three-wheeled motor vehicles (with a motor output of more than 15 kW, but only if the holder of the driving license is at least 21 years old).

BE

Combinations of a class B towing vehicle and a trailer provided the permissible total mass of the trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.

#3 Truck License

Class C entitles the holder to drive motor vehicles – except for motor vehicles in classes AM, A1, A2, A, D1, and D – with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3,500 kg and with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat (including trailers with a weight of no more than 750 kg).

If the motor vehicle is built and designed for passenger transport, it may no longer be driven with class C – regardless of the number of passenger seats. Trailers over 750 kg permissible total mass require a class CE driver’s license.

C1

Motor vehicles – except motor vehicles of the classes A1, A2, A, D1, and D – with a permissible total mass of more than 3,500 kg, but no more than 7,500 kg and with no more than 8 seats except the driver’s seat (also with a trailer with a permissible total mass of no more than 750 kg).

If the motor vehicle is built and designed for passenger transport, it may no longer be driven with class C1 – regardless of the number of passenger seats.

C1E

It is a combination of a towing vehicle of class C1 and a trailer weighing more than 750 kg or of class B and a trailer weighing more than 3,500 kg, provided that the maximum permissible weight of the combination does not exceed 12,000 kg in each case.

If the motor vehicle is built and designed for passenger transport, it may no longer be driven with class C1E – regardless of the number of passenger seats.

C

A large truck with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3,500 kg (no restriction upwards) and with no more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat (including trailers with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 750 kg).

If the motor vehicle is built and designed for passenger transport, it may no longer be driven with class C – regardless of the number of passenger seats.

CE

A large truck with trailer Combinations of a towing vehicle of class C and a trailer with a maximum permissible weight of more than 750 kg.

#4 Bus License

Buses and coaches have had their own driver’s license classes since 1999. For bus driver’s licenses acquired for the first time since Jan. 19, 2013, the number of seats available is no longer considered but rather the manufacturer’s design. This does not apply to bus driver’s licenses issued before 19.1.2013.

Thus, the driver’s license class D is required to drive motor vehicles designed and built to carry more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. For buses and coaches up to 8 m in length, designed and built to take more than eight and not more than 16 passengers (including trailers with a maximum gross weight of 750 kg), class D1 is required. Trailers with more than 750 kg maximum permissible gross weight require a class DE or D1E driver’s license.

D1

Buses up to 8 m in length, designed and built to carry no more than 16 persons in addition to the driver (including trailers with a maximum permissible gross weight of no more than 750 kg). If the vehicle is designed and built for passenger transport, a class D1 license is required.

D1E

Combination of class D1 driving license and trailer. Buses with at least eight but no more than sixteen seats, and trailers with a gross weight above 750 kilograms. A trailer loaded with passengers must not weigh more than an empty bus. A combined bus and trailer mass cannot exceed 12,000 kilograms.

Prior ownership of a class D1 license is a prerequisite for obtaining this license.

D

All buses that have more than 16 seats and trailers with a gross vehicle weight of up to 750 kg, and you must already have a B license.

DE

Combination of buses and trailers with a maximum permissible weight of more than 750 kg

#5 Tractor and Forklift License

Until 30.6.2012, driving license class L was limited to the maximum design speed of 32 km/h. All holders of this class will benefit from the extension to 40 km/h.

Class L driving licenses are only valid for agricultural or forestry purposes; the purpose limitation does not apply to driving licenses issued before 1999. Class L also includes self-propelled machines, forklifts, and other industrial trucks up to 25 km/h, along with trailers.

L

A tractor with a maximum design speed of 40 km/h, or 25 km/h if it is equipped with a trailer, is intended for use in agriculture or forestry.

Self-propelled working machines, feed mixers, forklifts, and industrial trucks, each with a maximum speed of 25 km/h (also with trailers).

T

Agricultural or forestry tractors with a maximum design speed of up to 60 km/h as well as self-propelled working machines.

Fodder mixing vehicles with a maximum design speed of up to 40 km/h, are intended for use for agricultural or forestry purposes according to their design.

The speed is including the trailers.

Class B Driving License in Germany

The Category B driver’s license is a car driver’s license. In a category B driver’s license, the permissible total mass of a car may be up to 3500 kg. Class B driving license also allows you to tow trailers (category BE) as long as the combination does not exceed 3500kg.

Classes B17, B96, and B196 are not independent driving license classes. They fall under class B.

How Much Does a Class B Driver’s License Cost

The cost of a category B driver’s license largely varies depending on the driving school as well as how fast the student learns. However, it generally costs less than 1000 euros but can be more than 2000 euros if the learner driver fails the test.

German Driving License Theory Test in English

Theory lessons are offered by Fahrschule(Driving Schools).  You have to take attend at least 14 lessons (12 in Grundstoff and 2 in Zusatzstoff). You can skip these lessons if you have converted your foreign driving license to a German one. Remember if you decide to skip theory classes then you have to prepare for the German theory test by yourself.

If you choose you to enrol in a Fahrschule, please consider these things. Always look for a recommendation from the local people. You should know if the Fahrschule staff can speak English or not. Fahrschule rating and reviews also matter. You can find these reviews online and don’t forget to share your personal experience as well.

As a lot of foreigners decide to convert their driving license into a German one and also prefer to skip the theory lesson classes. It is important to share from where you can practice by yourself.

To register for driving license test. You first need to register at Führerscheinstelle. Before visiting Führerscheinstelle please carry these documents with you.

After the successful registration, you have to wait for 4-6 weeks and will you receive a letter confirming the registration and then you have to pay the fee for theory and practical exam.

Appointment for the theory exam

Once you receive the letter from Führerscheinstelle and paid the fee for theory test you can request your driving school to book and test appointment on your behalf. Driving school can charge 40~80 to book an appointment.

Theory Test Exam

Finally, it’s the day. Either the driving school teacher will take you to the exam centre or you can reach there on your own. Make sure to reach the exam centre 15 minutes before the allotted time. You will be assigned a computer. You can give the theory test in 12 different languages: German, English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish and Arabic (only in some federal states). Make sure you to let the examiner know about your prefered language.

The test consists of 30 multiple questions. There could be one correct option or multiple correct options. Questions can be only text, videos or images. Above all, If you score 10 negative points you will fail the exam. If you pass the exam, the result is valid for 1 year. You have to clear your practical theory test within a year. Besides that, if you don’t pass the practical test within 12 months of giving the theory exam, you have to reappear for the theory exam.

Most importantly, don’t forget to bring

1. Passport and Aufenthaltstitel
2. Appointment letter (if provided by the driving school)
3. Training certificate issued by the driving school

What if you’re caught driving without a license?

Procedure for Getting German (Führerschein) Driving Licence

Depending on your country of origin, there are different requirements. For example, the legal driving age in Germany is 17; however, you need to be accompanied by an adult until you reach the age of 18. This used to be 18 years of age, but the Government changed the rules a couple of years ago; remember, an adult company is a must for someone with a German driver’s license for at least five years. There’s a practical test where well you have to drive the car. You’re going to be behind the wheel your driving instructor is going to be sitting next to you and the driving examiner is going to be sitting in the back. Driving School
